WRSSB was formed as a military/marching band in 1997, a year after the founding of Woodlands Ring Secondary School. Since its inception, WRSSB was a regular feature in the school’s parades, marching alongside our fellow uniformed-group CCAs under the baton of our founding band director Mr Richard Png. In 2005, Mr Png handed over the reins to Mr Colin Ng, who continued to grow and lead the band with passion, shaping generations of musicians and leaders in the process. Foot-drills were a common sight until 2014 when the band was converted into a Symphonic Band. This shift in focus brought a heavier emphasis on performing. Since then, the band has continued to progress and improve over the years, with a more performance-based repertoire that includes both pop songs, band classics and all-time oldies favourites. We feature both full band, ensembles, quartets as well as soloists who perform at the band’s various events and engagements. In 2021, WRSSB was rebranded a ‘Concert Band’ from ‘Symphonic Band’ in alignment with SYF-AP naming conventions. 

 

The band is currently led by Mr Kenneth Lun (Senior Band) and Mr Fabian Lim (Junior Band).

 

Mr Kenneth Lun

Mr Kenneth Lun graduated from the prestigious Peabody Institute of the John Hopkins University, Baltimore MD, USA with a Bachelor of Music (Major in Trumpet Performance and Minor in Jazz Trumpet). He has a distinguished career in the music scene, having served as the Principal Trumpet of the Singapore Lyric Opera Orchestra since 2008, and Lead and Solo Trumpet with the Summertimes Jazz Band. Kenneth has also had the privilege of performing as Principal Trumpet with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet and the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra. Kenneth currently serves on the Trumpet Faculty at the School Of The Arts, the National University of Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Band and Wind Symphony, as well as the Singapore Armed Forces Bands.

 

Mr Fabian Lim

Mr Fabian Lim graduated from the Berklee College of Music and is well-regarded in Singapore’s music circle, specializing in the saxophone. He has a Masters in Education (Music Specialisation) and a Post-graduate Diploma in Education from Nanyang Technological University. He is adept in playing a wide variety of styles, and has performed with many local music dignitaries such as Dick Lee, Jeremy Monteiro, J.J Lin, Iskandar Ismail, and also worked with international performers including Sandy Lam, A-Mei, Sky Wu etc.
