Double Bass

The double bass is the largest and lowest-pitched bowed string instrument in the modern symphony orchestra. Two styles of the bass bow are currently used: the short and narrow French bow (like a violin bow), held palm downward, and the broader German bow (like a viol bow), held palm upward. The double bass also can be played by plucking with the fingers. The double bass player stands or sits on a high stool and leans the instrument against the body when playing.
