Junior Band
Secondary 1s go through the specially designed Junior Band programme with their own dedicated Junior Band instructor. Students can expect to learn how to play an instrument, acquire the foundations of music making (e.g. tone, balance, rhythm), basic maintenance, and music theory
Students first go through an instrument rotation process where they get the chance to try out the various instruments in the band. They will have the opportunity to try an instrument from the six different instrument families (Higher Brass, Lower Brass, Higher Winds, Lower Winds, Double Reeds, Percussion) over the course of two weeks where they will be assessed based on their rhythm, intonation and ability to produce sound. This process matches their strengths to a suitable instrument and allows students to make a more informed decision when choosing their preferred instrument.
They then learn the foundations of music making and music theory, focusing on tone, rhythm and balance. They will be exposed to simple pieces ranging from Grade 1 or 2 to allow them to be able to progressively learn and make music.
The Junior Band will have mini-performances at various junctures to gradually build up their performance competency. They can expect to put up their first recital at the end of Term 1 in a Junior Band Presentation. This will continue over the year, culminating in the Junior Band investiture and performance either via an assembly performance, or the Junior Bands In Concert (JBIC), where they showcase their music learning to their family and friends.

Students will be inducted into the Senior Band at the end of the year, where they will be mentored and progressively eased into meeting the demands of the Senior Band programme.
